Travelling west along the N71 from Skibbereen to Ballydehob the sea vista is awesome, with the Fastnet Rock Lighthouse to be seen in the distance. Ballydehob's twelve-arch bridge overlooks a water sports lagoon. Here, the N71 takes a right for Bantry, but one can continue straight on through the village to complete the Mizen tour. Schull is a bustling village with lots of character and popular self-catering houses and apartments attracting large crowds there to take part in sailing and other water-based activities. Schull Community College has a unique attraction in the form of planetarium and is a landing and departure point for various islands. Bantry is a busy market town and seaport at the mouth of Bantry Bay, with a fine raised plaza in its main square, where one may relax before heading for the Beara Peninsula. On the way out one may again appreciate the rocky ruggedness and view the islands in the bay, including Whiddy and further out Bere Island, both served by ferries and Dursey which has a rather unique cable car service. Goleen is a pretty village in a lovely setting on the road to Mizen Head, where the Mizen Vision project is worth daring to cross the lofty bridge to the former lighthouse keepers' quarters. Barleycove beach is one of the finest in all of Ireland and, not far away, is the laid-back ambiance of Crookhaven village. Coming back from Mizen, it is worth turning off for Durrus to travel along the southern shore of Dunmanus Bay. There, one may head straight for Bantry, or take the scenic route, back through Ahakista and Kilcrohane, via Sheep's Head Peninsula. Sheeps Head The Sheep's Head Way is a noted walking route, but those not that energetic may like to enjoy a drive around the peninsula to take in the majesty of the sea and landscape. A truly breathtaking experience.
