- West Cork Tourism Activities Promotion Day
Actons Hotel Kinsale, Sunday, March 21st 2004
The Activities information event, which has been held as an evening event in recent years, was held on Sunday 21st March at Acton's Hotel Kinsale. 20 members exhibited at the event all of whom put great efforts into their individual display stands.
This event had previously been established to provide a forum for West Cork Tourism members to collect information on the activities and attractions in the region. The 2003 event had been poorly attended ant it was decided to broaden the focus of the event to encourage increased membership attendance as well as encouraging members of the general public to come along and browse the displays.
Although greater effort had been made with advertising the event (week long radio promotion and voucher facility in Examiner 'County' supplement) attendance was poor. This calls into question the nature of the event, which will now be assessed by West Cork Tourism's elected Council in advance of plans for 2005.

- West Cork Tourism Golf Classic
Bantry Bay Golf Club, 2 - 3 April 2004
Over 50 teams participated in the West Cork Tourism Golf classic on Friday 2nd and Saturday 3rd April last at Bantry Bay Golf Club. Most of the winning scores came during Friday's fine weather, while heavy overnight rain and stiff winds made Saturday's course a more difficult challenge. Fine shooting of 53 points (2 scores to count at the final 2) by a team led by Neil Crowley of Drimoleague was enough to see off the rest of the field.
West Cork Tourism has been promoting the golf facilities of the West Cork region for many years and is delighted develop this annual event in association with the clubs in the region.
At the presentation on Saturday evening Vivian O'Callaghan, chairman of West Cork Tourism, thanked the organising committee and the prize sponsors: Thornhill Bros., Skibbereen; The Spinning Wheel, Glengarriff; McCarthy Sports, Bantry; Spar, Cork Road, Skibbereen, as well as the staff and management of Bantry Bay Golf Club for their assistance during the 2-day event.

West Cork Tourism Meets with John O'Donoghue
West Cork Tourism met the Minister Arts, Sport and Tourism at a recent seminar held in Clonakilty. This was an
invaluable opportunity for West Cork Tourism to illustrate the sterling work undertaken by the organisation and to
indicate the strength of the industry in the region. We hope that this will encourage the Minister and his advisors
that the industry contains a number of regional organisations devoted to the promotion of the quality tourism services
around the country and additionally that these organisations and the members they serve need to be considered in all
national plans and consulted on the needs of the regions they serve.

Tourism Review Report Published
A study commissioned by the Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism, Mr. John O'Donoghue TD in December 2002 has been published. Entitled New Horizons for Irish Tourism, An Agenda for Action the study outlines the strategies required to ensure the industry grows and remains sustainable in an increasingly difficult economic climate.
The Review Group had been asked to:
- Identify the key elements of a strategy, both industry-led and Government-led, for the further sustainable development of tourism in Ireland, in the light of the assessment of the performance and economic impact of the sector over the past 10 years and
- Specify recommendations and actions, by the industry and the public sector, to give effect to the future strategy.
This report is welcomed by West Cork Tourism as it identifies the role the State must play in helping organisations such as ours weather the current storms and plan for grow into the future. The report is available in full on line at
